The Challenge

Pulse Fitness had genuinely strong retention numbers among users who made it past their first week, but the data hid a bigger problem: most new sign-ups never got that far. The onboarding flow buried the app's best features behind six separate screens of setup, and early usability tests showed people abandoning the app before logging a single workout. Support was fielding the same confused questions daily, a clear sign the interface itself was the bottleneck.

Our Approach

We mapped every existing user flow and cut anything that wasn't essential to that critical first workout. The result was an onboarding sequence trimmed down to three taps, with a visual hierarchy that puts the next action front and center instead of competing with five other options. We also designed a lightweight reward system, small wins and streaks, that gives new users a reason to open the app again the next day rather than forgetting it existed. Every screen went through two rounds of user testing with real Pulse members before we shipped anything.

The Result

Onboarding completion improved significantly almost immediately after launch, and daily active usage climbed within weeks as more users made it past that critical first session. Support tickets related to app confusion dropped as well, freeing the team to focus on product rather than damage control.
